Gwyn Mackenzie sang Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "der Hölle Rache" from "La Flauta Mágica". I couldn't make the title out from what she said, but I knew I heard it before. I looked up what "double hockey sticks" was in German. With that I found the title on a CD. Sure enough, same song. Quite well known too.

It is not necessary to distort one's mouth in order to make "operatic sounds" come out properly. There are different techniques, one of them being German, that encourage certain embouchures, but this is not a conventional teaching. The girl is too young to be singing this music, and this was more than evident. She should be singing Disney songs, and possibly art songs. Whoever has encouraged her to sing the Queen of the Night is obviously only in it for the possible money and fame, and does not have the girl's best interest in mind.

JoHar, please don't make comments like that without explaining yourself. Though I know nothing about opera singing, I was absolutely blown away by her performance on Leno. Do you think she didn't do justice to the mateiral, or maybe that she may physically damage herself by singing in that style at such a young age? I'm curious.
bp
Oh yes...and who would you recommend I listen to in order to hear "proper" female operatic singing? Thanks.
Marlene
I was quite amazed watching sweet little Gwen last night and I agree that Fame & Fortune is probably the reason why she is up there, but lets not forget the gifted, talent or skills, it takes. Most superstars having been "doing their thing" since they were about 3yrs. Sometimes it takes that kind of dedication to become the best of whatever it is you do. She was wonderful.

I have been a fan of the late Minnie Riperton's for almost 30 years. To me she had the most beautiful voice ever. Last night I witnessed Minnie's heir apparent.Gwyn will be the next Minnie Riperton.

JoHar is right. I am a vocal teacher. I grew up in Europe, and this kind of singing I have never seen in child so young. I wanted to sing opera since I was 5 but nobody wanted to deal with my voice until I reached age 14. Teachers said it is not healthy. Today I agree. I have been teaching and performing for past 15 years and I have students who went on singing Opera. Gwyn did an amazing performance, but repertoire is to hard to be done by a child. I hope she has people who will be there to support her at all times and assist her with vocal health issues that eventually may occur. Best wishes to Gwen she wll need lots of love.

I am so glad I heard that. I can't believe someone would want her to sing disney crap instead of what I heard. I know very little, but thank god I was able to see her sing something beautiful like that piece, other than some Brittany schlock. I am proud for her that whatever cicumstances brought her to that point, perhaps it;'s not greed and money that made her do that. I hope so, and i have this wierd feeling that girl is going to be just fine.
songbird
I agree with Visnja. I am a student studying vocal performance, and I know it isn't easy to just pop out those arias. This little girl's vocal health is at a great risk when somebody hands her an advanced piece such as "Der Holle Rache." People who have been well-educated in the field aren't worried as much about the destruction of a piece as they are about the possible harm that could come to an instrument, especially in a young child who wants a career in that industry. There's a very good reason why teachers hesitate or refuse to take a child whose voice is still growing under their wing.(Ex: I'm 21 and my voice is still changing from week to week. It won't settle until my mid-20s) As for the question of opera singers to listen to, I recommend as starters: Renee Fleming, Anna Netrebko, Cecila Bartoli and Denyce Graves. There are a great many others out there, but just keep in mind that no matter what people tell you, Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, Il Divo, Sarah Brightman and Charlotte Church do NOT sing opera. A foreign language does not always constitute as opera. (Yes, I hold a grudge, lol)
someone
Be sure to add Dawn Upshaw to the list of must-hear singers. She is equally comfortable with opera and Broadway, which is truly rare. Also, if you are looking for a group sound, Amici is a million times better than Il Divo - 3 men, 2 women, impeccable balance, gorgeous songs and arrangements, each member beautiful and highly talented, and sounding like a true ensemble should sound, not just a handful of soloists pretending to be an ensemble.

Gwen will be on Oprah on Monday 2/12/07. I personally know she is NOT in it for the money....this is a natural gift.
Ashley
She's so awesome
Stacey
I would like to know if there is a cd for opera singer Gwyn MacKenzie
Mack
I am partial to the two arguments in this forum. I am a vocal performance & pedagogy major getting ready to head to grad school (YAY!!) and I am quite aware of the developmental stages of the female voice at Gwyn's age. Singing such vocally dramatic arias so young can definitely be taxing on the vocal folds. However, Beverly Sills publicly sang Caro Nome on a radio show when she was eight years old. The difference is that Caro Nome is for a light coloratura voice while the Der Holle Rache is for a dramatic coloratura voice. If whoever in charge of young Gwyn cares enough about the preservation of her voice, then they will allow her to sing age appropiate classical music until her voice develops to where she vocally handle heavy duty arias.
Khris
Certain people just have gifts unique to them and as far as we understand, traditional rules dont apply to them as much. She even hinted at it herself, what we think is difficult is just easy for her. If anything, we need to feed her gift so that her gift is not stunted. Gwen with her perfect pitch and breath control is well...breathtaking. Money/fame can not be the drive, all who hear her recognize the rarity. I myself was a child singer who sang opera with Placido Domingo and Theresa Berganza in Carmen. Granted I was not as young as she is but it was before my voice changed due to puberty. I also sang in two other chorus, never with a physical problem. I believe puberty will be the greatest concern her family will need to be concerned with. Next time u hear her, close your eyes and only use your ears. She is a natural and when you hear her voice, it make you want to medically study her vocal cords and lungs. Hey system is advanced for her age. I wish Gwen and her family the best and I cant wait to hear her again.
Barbara Valsecchi
Thank you for the beautiful words and the interest in Gwyn. I just wanted you to know that you can now keep informed on her future performances on www.myspace.com/gwynmackenzie We are still working on the page, videos will be added soon but feel free to check often! Dreamland Entertainment

If the name of the aria is "Der Hölle Rache" (in German) why shouldn't the name of the opera be in German too? The name of the opera (its more a singspiel than an opera) is "Die Zauberflöte", not "La Flauta Mágica". The title of the aria is not "Der Hölle Rache", it's the aria nº14 of the 2nd act, it has no title but they decided that the first words that Königin der Nacht sings would be the way to identify that aria. Gwyn as a great talent, but I prefer to hear her singin "Meine Herr Marquis". She would be much better singing light coloratura pieces. She's just phenomenal! PS - I'm sorry if there's some mistakes; I'm Portuguese.
