Last night I spent the evening doing my nails, which makes working on the computer impossible. So I had, as my companion, the television set, which is a non-threatening way to spend a Halloween, unless you count the horrors I encountered, in the form of movie and t.v. stars whom I haven't seen for years! So while I trimmed, shaped, scrubbed, cleaned and removed the polish from my nails, I watched Criminal Intent, with the VCR all set and ready to tape at the touch of button, to see Liza Minnelli, who played the grieving mother of a child she had lost several years before. She is a wonderful actress, and did an admirable job in the role, but I kept thinking, "Oh My Lord, what have they done to her?" I know she wasn't supposed to be all glammed up, but she was so changed, I wasn't so sure it was her at all. I know they had to drab her down a bit,and yes, it has been some years since "Cabaret", but this is really going too far! Everytime she came on the screen I just stared and stared, trying to figure out what it was that bothered me so much about her appearance. It was nearly the end of the program when it hit me. When it did, I dropped cotton balls all around me! She had her nose done, and probably quite a bit more! I was,and am, amazed! Why? She was such a cute personality, that really stood out in a crowd, and now she is so plain! It's just awful! Take it from one who almost got cheated out of a nose altogether! She had a magnificent nose, and now it's gone, and I am so dispirited over the fact that I shall never see how "Sally Bowles" aged! What a let-down!
So, while I watched the evening news, I put on the base coat of polish, and the first color coat, but then I had to go back and re-strip three nails that got smuched up while I was working on them, and so when the "Tonight Show" started, I had yet to finish with the base coat again, but by the time Roseanne Barr came out, I had finished with the base and first coat of color, and they were drying. So, very carefully, I hit the button to tape her entrance, and wow! She looked terrific! Even as a fallen Angel, with a grey wig she looked good. I don't know what she has had done but I do think she has lost weight, and improved her looks by going blonde, and her make-up was very nicely done as well. So, not all the changes were scary, thank goodness.
After that, I added the last coat of color, and finally the top coat of sealer and shine, and as my nails dried for the last time, I switched over to CBS, and caught an interview with an interestingly familiar woman, whom I couldn't quite place, but then mention was made of "Star Wars", and I did the O.M.G! It. can't. BE! NO! This is not that fresh-faced,neat as a pin, shiny haired princess of Yon son's dreams! But it was. It was Carrie Fisher, completely unrecognizable as such. I don't want to be mean, so I'm not going to go into detail, other than to say that we all age differently, and for some, twenty-five years flies by and we may put on an extra pound or so, or even develop a wrinkle here or there, but for the most part, it's like we saw them yesterday. But for others, twenty-five years can be very hard times, and not treat us kindly at all.
And the scary part is, we never know who is going to be lucky enough to get better as we age or not...or even if we take steps to improve ourselves, just how that will turn out either. But an event such as this can start one thinking about all those natural beauties we went to high school with. Makes you wonder how they turned out, now, umpty-ump years later, when you are being accused of being your big grown up son's sister or girlfriend or wife! (HA!) Considering all I saw last night, might there have been a Liza or a Carrie in my old school class? Hmm. Does it not delight the imagination?
