At long last, Someone with connections has been able to reach somebody with some power! It was over 13 years ago that Yon son went to work as a cab driver, and in that first year, he came across a situation that upset him greatly. He has had occasion to deal with blind customers on a daily basis, and had great compassion for them. As should be obvious, a blind person cannot tell you what bill it is they hold in their hand, unless they have a caring sighted person to help them fold them a certain way, so they can differentiate the denomination of them. What upset him even further was that when cabbies get together they talk. They say some things about how they make extra money, and what he was hearing he was not liking. So, even if the man or woman hands you a bill, folded a certain way so they know what they gave you, they must then trust you to give them proper change. Unfortunately, in many cases, the unsighted misplaced their trust, and left many cabs several dollars shorter than they should.
I began to notice that Yon son was coming home from work without stopping to have a drink with the boys, and wasn't laughing at their, "private jokes",and soon, he stopped talking to some of those guys altogether. At a mention of some of his here-to-fore buddies, Yon would sometimes get a look on his face of outrage, and sometimes even look sick to his stomach. When I asked him questions about it, he finally told me what I imparted to you at the first part of this piece. And then he said," Mom,the government should do something about this! They should have Braille imprints on the bills, so the blind aren't so easily ripped off!" Since then, he has been a one-man crusader for money for the blind,button-holing anyone and everyone who would listen to him for two minutes to try and get the word out. And, no, I don't really think that anything he said or did made any difference....but you never know.
At any rate, he is joyously celebrating that someone finally got the same idea, because you see, he has never given up hope that some way, some day, this inequality would be rectified. And now, instead of just talking about how it should be done, he can go back to all those cabbies who brayed in his face over his " high-ideals"...and even though he should do a little braying of his own, Yon son won't do that. He will just tell them the good news, and he will smile.
