This 11 year old girl presented on Oprah's show today: discovered on "America's Got talent", has talent. No two ways about it, the little red head has a voice that is an amazing instrument. If you know anything about me, you know that I love music, and I love to hear beautiful voices lifted in song, and when Oprah introduced Bianca, I wanted to like her, got all set to tape her singing. And, I did. And I watched, and waited, for something that never came. That thrill that I usually get when I am brought face to face with potential greatness. Now, don't misunderstand me, the potential is there; the voice is there. But, only just. Yes, she is a pretty enough girl, and should grow up to be a beauty. But the use to which her voice was put today, was muddled, seemed forced, and the song itself was incomprehensible. She needs a voice coach, to teach her to enunciate clearly. I could scarcely understand a word she uttered. I had to go to Oprah's site to get the name of the song, because I just couldn't make it out! Which, by the way, turns out to be "And I'm telling you I'm not going!" That's all.
Now this is not prideful bragging, just the simple truth. When first exposed to certain artists, I knew immediately that they were going to be great. Michael Jackson, Whoopi Goldberg, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and IL Divo, just to name a few. I knew because they had that spark, that fire in their very presence that overcame whatever gaps in their training or material that would come with time, and I felt that thrill in response to their performance.
I hope that Bianca develops it. I really do. I wish her all the luck in the world. But from where I sit, she's going to need it.
