Well, it's been a wonderful summer, with the garden and all, but when we get a hard freeze, that is the end of the growing season. We knew we had that killing frost coming up this week, so Tuesday and Wednesday we harvested. We have bowls and trays and baskets of tomatoes, squash, pumpkins, and squmpkins all over the kitchen. As well, the beautiful coleus was dug up from the flowerbeds, potted and brought inside so we could enjoy them all winter.
Even more delightful to know that all these fruits and vegetables were organically grown, with no fertilizer, or pesticides. Everything has been washed, inspected and found to be completely free of any mud or bugs. Throughly knowing the origin of our food is one of the more reassuring aspects of gardening. What little peppery butter-crunch leaf lettuce we had out of the garden we knew was safe to eat,for the aforementioned reasons, and because all of our produce was watered by hand with our own drinking water.
Up until now, I would have agreed with the general public opinion that our food source is safe. But this year I felt led of the Lord to make my feelings known to Yon son, and after his first assent to it, and the normal attitude of " Gee, I'd love to do that mom, but not right now...." This time, I didn't let it go by the wayside. This time, I kept after him, urging him, helping him to find ways to get out and get the tomato sets, until he got into it, and became diligent about it. Then somewhere along the line, it must have all come back to him that I have always wanted a garden, even when we didn't have room for one. And when we did have room for one, I just know he began to think back on all those times when he and I would be on our knees in the dirt, hacking up the soil, digging up weeds, busting clods, hoeing and racking, removing rocks and stones, building topsoil, planting and watering and gazing at the work of our hands. I am sure he knows that if I weren't in a wheelchair, I would have been out there doing most of the work myself, but that is not possible.
But, praise the Lord, he made it possible for Yon son to get into the gardening this year and it's made a huge, HUGE, difference in our food budget, and helped us to avoid some of the more unpleasant food news this summer. With that as a consideration, I am convinced that those who have a way to do it, should try their hand at gardening next summer. IT could save your life!
