It has officially been confirmed, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, Al Qaeda's leader in Iraq was killed in an American air strike north of Baghdad,Wednesday, June 7, 2006. This was the most wanted man in Iraq for his leadership of Islamic terrorist attacks, responsible for many of the most brutal acts of the war, including scores of suicide bombings, kidnappings, and beheadings. His identity has been positively made by fingerprints and facial features, as well as other indicators. With him were seven other associates, also killed in the strike. Iraqi officials who declared this news,as I understand it, were beaming and gloating as though this were some sort of turning point in the war, and it probably was. Whether that turning point will turn out to be a good thing, hopefully, bringing the conflict to an end, or not, remains to be seen. One can only hope that this will lessen the fervor with which Al Qaeda has pursued their agenda, rather than look upon this incident as a martyring of a fallen hero. The response is in doubt, so no rejoicing is in order over this man's death. Only very cautious optimism, and prayer for the peace in Iraq.
