First, you have to be able to hear that still small voice. So, start by turning off the ipod, the television,or the radio. Likewise, set aside all other distractions, like munchies and strong beverage. Only keep by your side, cold water,or other soft drink, and your pen and paper, or the keyboard. Ask, in faith that the Holy Spirit speak to you. Now, don't go on and on about it, because you can't hear, and talk at the same time. Once you have made your request,be still. Wait, for the moving of the spirit. Now, sometimes, it may take a while, because you will hear God's response, when he is ready, not necessarily when you are ready. Personally, sometimes, I have heard that mighty rushing wind, spoken of in the book of acts, that accompanied the presence of the Holy Spirit arriving, but as thrilling as such instances may be, once you have received the in-filling of the Holy Spirit, then the mighty rushing wind, as wonderful as it is, is superfluous, really. What matters most here is, when you are given the utterance, of the words you hear down inside your self, the "prayer language" you speak it,and then wait, for the word from the Lord. When the word comes to you, it is glorious. It is unmistakable, in it's quickness and quiet peacefulness, and yet, it always is complete.Always instructive, and always a blessing. Once you hear it, you will never forget it.It is possible to have a conversation with the Holy Spirit, but only about the word of God, and nothing about the actual Holy Spirit himself. He won't speak of himself. I have asked the Lord about many things, and he has led me and instructed me about many things in response, but only those things that were important to me,unless he felt it necessary to correct me on something, because, God chastises those he loves. No, not bring up certain sins, although, that does happen, at the time of the sin, sometimes, but when you are wrong, he may remind you, you are going about this in the wrong way. You must step out in Faith! For instance, don't wait until you have the money to pledge it to the church, or the mission field, step out in faith, and promise, and if it is a just cause, I will bring the necessary funds to you! Now, don't seek a word from God frivolously, because chances are, he will not respond to such. Faith, and seeking the Lord go hand in hand, so if you are just doing it to try the spirit, he will know, and there is no guarantee that he will hear such, and yet, we read in scripture that God says, try me and see,so don't go by what I say, but only keep your own counsel, and stand on whatever scripture you choose to make your request. 'Cause see, God is there. He is anxiously waiting to speak to you,and let you know that you can trust him, if only you will. All you have to do is give him a chance to lead you through this wasteland we dwell in,to a place that will sustain you until it is time to go home. He knows you can't live it on your own, no one can. That was the whole point of Christ's life. He was the only man who could walk perfect before the Lord God,and it is in him that we can live life the way God intended.
So, if you would have the Holy Spirit to speak to you, ask, and then, listen, for that beautiful still small voice. He's waiting to be able to say to you, "Son/Daughter, fear not, for I am with you."
p.s. And, when I said to the Lord, did I say too much? He said,No, not enough! You didn't remind them how much I love them,or that I desire that not one of them be lost, but that all should be saved. Thus sayeth the Lord!
