(As sung by the Gaither homecoming friends, with Larry Ford singing the lead)
This is one of the most beloved hymns in all Christendom. It's known all around the world. It came from an Irishman, Joseph Scribben, in the 1800's. He immigrated to Canada, where he met and fell in love with a beautiful girl. When she agreed to marry him, she also agreed with him that if and when they had any problems, they would just take them to the Lord. And so, they planned to marry. The day before their wedding, his Bride went out in a boat with some friends, and during the ride, it is reported that she suddenly said, "This is my last boat ride, as a Bride!" Then suddenly, a gust of wind came up, and capsized the boat, and all were rescued, except for Josephs fiancee. When Joseph got the news, it seemed that his whole life, in that moment was lost.Overcome with grief, Joseph fell to his knees, and he began to pray, remembering his bargain with his love.He began to ask God for help, and God helped him in his sorrow. Not long after this, his mother came to him in great distress, needing solace for her problems, and putting pen to paper, Joseph wrote out of his own experience, to bring comfort to his mother. He knew what he spoke about when he wrote:
All: What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bare, what a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer. Oh, what griefs we have in torment. Oh, what grievous pains we bare. All because we do not carry, everything to God in prayer.
Larry Ford: Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble everywhere? We should never be discouraged, take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful? Who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every grievance, Take it to the Lord in prayer....
All: Take it to the Lord in prayer!
