1. Oh! I love flowers, whether they are fresh cut, or potted, but I really get upset when I go to a store, and see them stone dry, and withering in front of a whole store full of people who should have the brains to water them! I make scenes! I point and view with alarm, loudly and with great indignance, until I see someone actually watering the plants, or putting the cut flowers in water. Then, I remind them that after 5 minutes of being out of water, the stem heals, and won't draw water until you re-cut them.I keep it up until I am satisfied that all those plants and flowers are going to be kept wet, and then, just before the manager tries to throw me out, I whip my cape up over my shoulder, and loudly declare, "WHAT A DUMP! WE'RE LEAVING!" and I make my grand exit. Then I go from store to store until I find one where I don't have to make a scene, and THAT'S where I buy my flowers. So there!
2. I love lobster, but I've never been able to bring myself to buying one.The poor things look so pitiful, crawling around in that tank, with their claws taped shut...and besides, then I would have to take it home and cook it,and I am told that they scream when you put them in the cooking pot.Ohhh! No! I just couldn't do that. The guys at red lobster must wear earplugs, or be deaf. Maybe that's a requirement for employment.Come to think of it, the waiters don't seem to hear very well, either...
3.Sunday is Mother's day, and already I have several gifts. Lord only knows what else is on the agenda for this week-end. Hope yours is as wonderful as mine is shaping up to be. Sure wish my Mommy was alive, so I could spoil her rotten, like I used to...hope yours is. Gosh, but I miss her hugs. You know, nobody, but nobody can hug you, like your mommy.
4.Tomorrow is the Kentucky Derby, and I'll be watching. It's a great race, but have you noticed all the publicity about Stienbrenner having his horse in the race? What's up with that? Who cares? It's not like Ol George is going to get out there on the track and run himself, so what's the big deal? You don't suppose he yells and carries on with his horse the way he was reported to do with his ball club, do you? I can't think of a less likely temperment than his to be around those high strung, sensitive thoroughbred horses. Can you? But, who knows? Perhaps this man whom has been represented as being so rough and gruff with humans, has a soft spot in his heart for animals. It could happen.
5.I am still trying to decide what to say, should I be asked, what I want for Mother's day dinner. I almost always favor chicken, but that's a lot of work for a guy who will work all night saturday, and will work all night Sunday. He has to sleep sometime. Hm. Maybe I'll just suggest KFC? Yum! Or, maybe, b-b-q ribs! yeah! That could work...shucks. Now I have to decide between the two!
6.I don't know if this effects anyone else, but I think I have a curse over me. Every time I find something I really really like, they stop making it. You laugh, but It happens to me all the time. With the exception of KFC, and Snapple, peach flavored iced tea.Honestly. Not just once or twice, now, I am talking literally hundreds of times.Of course, right at the moment, I can't think...of more than one or two items, but Orvell Redenbackers had carmel microwaveable popping corn, now, I can't find it anywhere.Sara Lee sent me a coupon for mince pie, and I spent months around Christmas time trying to find it, sorry, not around here! I am nuts about those whole canned chickens, fully cooked, in a great big can.Not there.Canned bacon from Denmark, no.Instant Mocha cappuccino, decaf, not any more. The list just goes on and on.But, enough about that. I am making myself hungry, and getting frustrated at the same time.
7.Speaking of food,(and it's obvious I shouldn't be) I noticed that there was a quest for the recipe for a Ruben sandwich , so, very briefly, I can supply that info, and it is as follows; fully cooked corned beef, hot or cold, cut against the grain of the meat,on rye bread, whatever type you prefer. myself, I use beefstake hearty rye, with caraway seeds, and traditionaly, you use thousand island dressing, but I go for mustard and Miracle whip myself, Swiss cheese, and saurkraut. You can either toast the bread first, or grill the whole thing until the cheese melts, or you can wave it for a few seconds, just till the cheese is runny, and cut and serve warm, and don't forget the kosher dill pickle on the side. YUM.and, it goes great with potato salad, cole slaw, baked beans, and any sort of relish tray you like, such as ramaki, sweet pickles, and thin strips of bell peppers, with dips, and of course, a veggie tray! Oh! and don't forget the icy cold creme soda to keep it all kosher!
8.Have you tried carmel apple dip? It sure is easier to eat a sliced apple dipped in carmel, than struggling with a apple on a stick with all those nuts all over the place, like we did when we were kids.It also makes the quota of 5 to 7 servings of fruits and veggies a day easier to make, too. Sometimes, that apple lurking on my plate is very daunting. Not so with the dip! Which reminds me, excuse me while I go get my orange...oh and by the way, the dip, won't work for oranges, bla! For oranges, you got to have chocolate!
9.Another thing you can do with corned beef, is a cassarole, something like a hash, but with most of the same ingredients as the ruben. But, unlike the hash, you substitute rice for the potato, about 2-3 cups cooked rice, with 1 small or 1/2 medium minced onion worked into it.salt and pepper to taste, and an equal amount of the corned beef, cubed small, mixed into the rice mixture, and layer into the cassarole, starting with,(believe it or not) your favorite spagetti sauce, then the rice, then saurkraut, and swiss cheese, and then another layer of rice, and so on to the top, but leave room, because your going to cover the whole thing with the spagetti sauce.Cheese on top is recommended, but optional, and it works just as well with whatever kind of cheese you prefer, it doesn't have to be swiss. Pop it into a pre-heated oven at 350 for about 20 min. or until it is all bubbly, and that's it! Serves four nicely, and goes with almost any side dish or salad, and don't forget the garlic toast and parmesan cheese!
10.My son and I have a new favorite,(let's hope they don't stop making it) It is already fully cooked bacon.Just in time for that surprise Mother's day breakfast in bed some of you have thought about doing.Do the whole meal, heat through the bacon in the microwave at the last minute, and of course, it only takes a minute to cook an egg, put it on a pretty tray, (or a platter, come on,)and don't forget a rose or other flower, and Mom will be so pleased.
Happy Mother's day, father's day, flag day, fourth of july, labor day...!
