When we talk about danger, we usually think of something real,
obvious, and physical. That is what makes the times we are living in
so threatening. If you pay attention to the media, you have warnings
coming at you from all directions, about food, medications, illnesses,
almost everything you purchase or want to purchase, people and
places. It gets to be a bit bewildering. Add to that the double
headache with the responsibility of a home and family, especially
children. But all these considerations dwindle into near invisibility
when you add the fun new variable of "terrorist" attacks dropped
into the equation. Now we can see our own neighborhood under
attack in our imaginations. And for some of us, we already have,
FOR REAL.
And yet, the warnings keep right on coming. violent video games.
and of course, the Internet. Scams,spams.pop-up ads, sexual
predators...do we detect a little overkill going on here?
And, where does all this lovely caring and sharing come from?
What is it's source? Why, the friendly little t.v., of course.
Now, don't get me wrong. I am the first one to want to know
such vital information, but it is increasingly unreliable.
So. How do we get the important news, without subjecting ourselves
to so much frightening information that we end up in a corner,
staring fixedly and gnawing our fingernails down to nubbins?
SLOW DOWN. Relax. Think. Watch and listen carefully with your
family, and then, you decide, together, how to handle the information
that you have been given.
Unlike animals, who were only given instinct and reflex/ reactive
learning capabilities, man has the ability to reason. Most of us
know the difference between right and wrong, and this too, is the
gift only man possesses. Animals can only learn this through what
training they receive...(yes, well, some say that man is the same
way, but we have a generally accepted standard applicable to all,
where Lassie only knew the right and wrong that Rudd Weatherwax
instilled in her/him.) While I'm on the subject of dogs,a new fright-
ful phenomenon has reared it's ugly head. Dog attacks. In fact,
in our area, there've been so many severe attacks lately, that
the authorities are considering banning certain breeds of dogs.
Such as pit bulls. For a very long time, I was on the fence about this
issue, because, being a dog lover and breeder and raiser of several
lovely dogs, I felt, as most dog lovers do, that the breed of an
animal was not the problem, but the way it was raised and trained
determined whether it would turn out to be a good social animal,
or a vicious one. Then,a situation occurred that I did not set up...
a sweet couple friends of ours came to the house with two puppies.
One was a black lab, and the other was their new pit bull. Both
these dogs were the same age, and about the same size. The lab
was a gift to us,and we loved him.The pit bull they named "A"
and the lab we called"B". Every week-end we would get together,
and visit, party or whatever, and "A" and"B" were right there with us.
We watched them play together, and laughed at their antics, and
corrected them the same. Those two dogs grew up with each other
as pals and playfellows, and we were pretty comfortable in the
assumption that they would remain so. As it happens, once they
reached maturity, then we noticed that "A" was being far too
rough with "B" and finally, we had to put a stop to our friends
bringing "A" over. Sadly, that was pretty much the end of the
friendship all the way around. Both dogs were accustomed to
going almost everywhere with the families. The old, "Love me,
love my dog" philosophy kicked in.And I was knocked off that
fence I had been on all those years. I was saddened, disappointed,
and very surprised at the turn of events. Apart from being one
of the ugliest dogs on the face of the planet, "A" had been a sweet
puppy, with a darling personality. I loved him almost as much as
I loved "B". But, when they grew to adulthood, "B" stayed sweet,
and "A" turned mean and nasty, and untrustworthy. With my own
eyes I saw him turn on his own mistress one day,and she had to shut
him out in the yard until her husband came home, she was so
frightened of him. So much for my theories.
But, it proves that animal instinct, and human reason are
diametrically opposed. No one could "reason" "A" out of his nasty
behavior, because he did not possess the power to think.
push button a, get response a.
Man, on the other hand, can take in information, process it, and
reach a solution, set aside his instinctual response, and in a sense,
override it,in favor of the right thing. But, I digress.
The point being, when you or your family have reached a point
of saturation of information, it would be wise to turn off the
television for a while. Read a book. Have a conversation, or
cook a meal together. Give all that Grey matter a while to rest
from the constant bombardment of the ideas of the outside world
coming at you in that steady stream of propaganda, meant to
cause you to think their way, create feelings of nervousness, stress,
and worry about things you cannot change.
I can guarantee that you will come back refreshed, especially if you
spend some time in the prayer closet,or in THE WORD. Preferably,
both. Spend some time without the garbage. You know what they say,
garbage in, garbage out.
If all you put in your mind is junk, that is all that will come out
of your mouth.
BE YE THEREFORE TRANSFORMED, BY THE RENEWING OF
YOUR MIND....
OUI?
